MAKIRA-ULAWA PREMIER HARASSED

Makira Ulawa Provincial premier John Mamafe was reported to have been harassed yesterday morning in front of more than 40 participants attending a one week workshop on Land Reform in the provincial capital Kirakira.

One of the participants of the workshop, Henry Haaina from Ugi reports that an intending candidate in the coming Makira-Ulawa provincial elections Martin Karani, walked into the workshop venue while the workshop sessions was about to begin and confronted Premier Mamafe.

Mr Ha’aina says Mr Karani pulled Premier Mamafe by the arm and forced him to return to his office while the rest of the workshop participants watched on.

Mr Haaina, says the chiefs of Makira Ulawa province, government officers and other prominent community leaders attending the Land Reform workshop, condemned the action by Mr Karani as a disrespectful attitude towards the Province’s head of government.

Mr Karani was said to be angered by the delay in the issuance of a fishing license to him and his Asian business counterparts.

He is currently in Makira with his Asian counterpart pursuing the fishing license with the Provincial government.

AT least 73 children were victims of commercial sexual exploitation of children in 12 villages in Arsoi Region, Makira Province.
This was revealed in a report released by the Christian Care Centre yesterday.
According to the Commercial Sexual Exploitation of Children (CSEC) Report, in meetings held in 12 villages in Arsoi Region, there were some 60 stories of child sexual abuse.
“There were at least 73 children who were victims,” the report said.
The report addresses CSEC or sexual abuse in exchange for money or goods and the presence of logging industry and the role this industry plays in abusing and exploiting children.
The report also revealed that child prostitution was the most prominent type of exploitation, with 25 stories collected, affecting 36 children.
It said these children ranged from age 11 through to 19 with most children aged 13 to 15 years.
“Most of the perpetrators were foreign loggers,” the report said.
It was also found that children were entering into early marriage or being “sold” into marriage by parents.
“There were 12 stories of children entering into early marriage. All but two were marriages to foreign loggers and six stories were about girls below the legal age of 15. There were two cases where a child was at risk of being trafficked or sold to be taken to another country,” the report revealed.
The report said pregnancy of children was also an issue with nine stories of underage girls becoming pregnant.
It said even pornography and children was a major issue in the villages where the project was run.
“There were two cases where pornography was of Solomon Islander children. There were also a further five cases of children being shown pornographic movies or pictures – both within the camps and within the villages,” the report said.
Dr Tania Herbet of Christian Care Centre said the report documents some very disturbing and illegal practices by some foreign logging companies operating in the country.
“The report therefore calls for a concerted effort which should be government led with a strong voice and action from the Ministry of Women, Children and Youth in order to stop it,” Dr Herbet said.
Other recommendations highlighted in the report include the need for;
* further projects and research,
* mobilization of services,
* increased involvement of government service at the local level,
* involvement of logging companies and
* reduce access of children to logging camps
Dr Herbet said these are some ways to address the issue.

Residents of Makira-Ulawa Provincial town, Kira Kira have over the past two days been waiting for the appearance of platoons of what they believe to be the province’s secret army.

Residents of Makira-Ulawa Provincial town, Kira Kira have over the past two days been waiting for the appearance of platoons of what they believe to be the province’s secret army.

A reliable source from Kira Kira told SIBC News that the army was to have been part of celebrations to mark the provinces Second Appointed Day.

Celebrations to mark the province’s Second appointed day have been deferred for later this month.

The source from Kira Kira said the belief of a secret provincial army was promoted by senior citizens of the provincial town, including Provincial Assembly Members.

He said the provincial town was tense and at the same time confused over the past two days, as residents await the appearance of the secret provincial army.

Meanwhile, the Makira-Ulawa provincial government has moved celebrations of its Second Appointed Day which falls today, to August 17th to coincide with the Province’s “Chiefs Empowerment Day”.

Haurosi and RCDF

Here is a hot topic for those of us from Haurosi (Haununu and Arosi). What do you think of it.

The people of Maru Bay area in West Makira like the so called Chief John Melzar Harai, Chief Riidangi, Andersen former MP Mathias Taro, L. Taro and others are complaining bitterly about the MV Haurosi because I bought it with the West Makira RCDF for 2006 and 2007.
What my oppositions must understand is that I am not Solomon Mamaloni, John Saunana,Jackson Sunaone and Mathias Taro. I am JAPHET WAIPORA. As such my policy on RCDF for West Makira is different.
During my time in Parliament I will never ever make cash handouts to individuals from the RCDF funds as the four previous MPs did during their times.
RCDF funds come from the Republic of China (Taiwan) for rural community development in the constituency and not to buy food, seafares, casino, beer etc etc in Honiara.
For the last 40 years, that has been the practice in West Makira constituency. MPs were handing out money to individuals in substantial amounts to buy foods to take home. I saw their records. This is a total misuse of public money.
Solomon Mamaloni was in Parliament for 30 years and John Saunana, Jackson Sunaone and Mathias Taro shared 10 years.
A total of 40 years. What tangible development have they done for Haununu and Arosi? The only one I know is SOMMA destroyed the lands and bushes in Arosi.
I want to make the people of West Makira get out from dependency. Therefore handouts of cash to individuals is not in my policy.
I bought the MV Haurosi for you to use. Therefore you must be ready with your produces for Haurosi to being them to Honiara. MV Haurosi answers your shipping need.
I know who are against me with the MV Haurosi. They are great lius (unemployed) in Honiara parasite on wantoks. You can see them roaming around on the streets and under the trees in Honiara everyday.
Wantoks you are wasting your time and causing great burden on working families to feed you everyday. You must go home now and be useful in your respective villages. Go back and fill up MV Haurosi with the fruits of the money you got from the MPs during the last 40 years.
The MV Haurosi will be under the Management of Dream time for the next 12 months. Up to this day Dreamtime has been serving Makira people with shipping and they should be thankful for that service.
As for me I recognize the effort of the Management of Dreamtime. Dream time had rescued me with my financial problem for MV Haurosi. I am very thankful for Karl Belden and his good wife Martha Belden.
The financial suggestion for me by the so called Chief Riidangi as the solution for my financial difficulty for MV Haurosi is rubbish.
